About 'Legal Aware' – for Snews, the BPP Student Society newsletter

We are submitting this for the next edition of Snews – the BPP Student Society newsletter.

The BPP Legal Awareness Society continues to go from strength-to-strength. The Society actively promotes commercial awareness of all students, but particularly law students making training contract applications.

You can view details on the official BPP student website here.

The Society comes very strongly from the perspective of the business client wishing to explore the possible advantages and disadvantages of key business decisions.  Such decisions often are necessary as a business client wishes to increase market share, domestically or globally, within its own market sector. However, the Sector assumes no prior legal or business knowledge.

It uses as examples current news and events from the world of business and corporate law to explain how businesses not only comply with the law, but also apply the law to generate a significant competitive advantage.

The meetings are fortnightly, and held at the Law School in Holborn. Each meeting discusses a current theme of corporate law. Any BPP student can attend, and meetings last no more than one hour each. Members of the Society can sign up officially on the BPP students website; in doing so, they become on the mailing list and receive notification of forthcoming meetings.

Members of the Society are encouraged to become involved in contributing to the Legal Aware blog, which covers a range of news stories as diverse as social law and international corporate transactions. There are opportunities also for members of the Society to become involved in the Committee functions, and to become involved in other initiatives such as podcasts.

Members are also encouraged to immerse themselves in a wider Twitter community, with the @legalaware thread. Currently, there are over 4600 followers including GDL, LLB, LPC and LLM students, legal journalists, lawyers involved in social justice, well-known law firms, several QCs, and principal legal educators.

A pervasive theme, in addition to “commercial awareness”, is developing skills in online verbal reasoning tests, as for training contract applications. Specifiic workshops exploring verbal reasoning technique and worked examples are  in fact offered.

We hope that your studies are going well, but that also you will consider sharpening your commercial awareness acumen through involvement with our Twitter, blog, meetings, or otherwise.
