BPP student societies podcast: legal aid and access to justice
It was with massive pleasure that, after a morning looking at the corporate strategy of Tesco as part of my MBA, I managed to make it to go to the BPP Law School at Holborn. There, I managed to bump into, by accident, Ray Stewart who has made a massive, beneficial impact on me personally as Learning Support Officer for BPP. His role at our University College is enormous, and it never fails to amaze me how much he gets done on behalf of all of us.
Our team of six podcasters (aside from me) was meticulously prepared, and knew their subjects backwards. We appeared to enjoy recording them, so much so we’ll be doing some more shortly, we hope. The podcasters are all students at BPP, and happen to be doing either the Graduate Diploma in Law or the Legal Practice Course prior to their training contracts.
In this final podcast, for the time-being, we discuss whether the legal aid cuts are a big deal or not, but in a wide-ranging discussion we go onto discuss whether it’s possible to be a self-litigant these days and what the point of a solicitor is. We hope you enjoy listening to the podcast as much as we enjoyed making them.
The podcasts are a joint initiative between the BPP student societies, the BPP Commercial Awareness Society and the Legal Awareness Society. The views expressed in this podcast are personal views of the student contributors, and cannot be taken to be legal advice of any description. They do not represent any official views of BPP.
Have a nice weekend. Please follow @legalaware on Twitter, the official Twitter thread of the Legal Awareness Society, one of the student societies at BPP. You can find details about the Legal Awareness Society and the Commercial Awareness Society on the official BPP students website here.
BPP Student Societies: Podcast on employment and podcast on bribery
Employment issues have been in the news recently. Here a team of six podcasters met up in the BPP Law School, Holborn, this afternoon to discuss the latest proposals for employment law. Employment is a compulsory subject on the Legal Practice Course. In the first podcast, we discuss the potential effect of the proposals on key stakeholders and who would actually benefit from any changes in the law. In the second podcast, we consider the relatively new legislation of the Bribery Act. The views in these podcasts are personal to the participants, and do not represent the views of BPP. The material in the podcasts certainly do not constitute any form of legal advice. The Legal Awareness Society and Commercial Awareness Societies are student-run Societies at BPP, and the podcasts are an independent initiative.
Thank you very much to the volunteer students who gave up their time for this in a busy studying schedule this afternoon to do this.
Update on the LegalAware podcasts
Podcasts : a joint project by the BPP Legal Awareness Society and the BPP Commercial Awareness Society. These Societies are independent student-run Societies, by BPP students.
We’ll be doing our first recordings of the LegalAware podcasts. To be involved, please email me at correspondence@lasmeetings.org
Harry (President of the BPP Commercial Awareness Society) will then invite you by email. It’s possible we’ll have to record more than one podcast, as there’s a lot of people who wish to be involved according to the response so far.
To join either Society, please use the following link(s) to the official BPP students website:
BPP Commercial Awareness Society
We will be recording the first set of podcasts from 2 pm on Thursday 24 November 2011. We will be meeting in the Student Cafe of BPP Holborn in the Basement floor, from then. However, we’ve had a big response to this, so unfortunately it’s not feasible for you just to turn up on the off-chance. You’ll have to email correspondence@lasmeetings.org in advance
The podcasts will be about 10-15 minutes each. The aim is to explain the importance of the law for businesses, and vice versa, in a friendly manner suitable for any member of the general public to understand.
The podcasts will be published immediately on the popular http://www.legal-aware.org blog. We’d be more than happy, of course, if you were selected to be a podcast presenter, for you to put down the recordings as examples of teamwork and commercial awareness in corporate training contract or vacation placement application forms.
We don’t have any particular topics in mind, and we’ll be prepared to talk about anything you wish to discuss. Harry and I have a very good working knowledge of law firms, commercial law and law news between us. You might like to have a look at recent online editions of the Gazette, Lawyer, or the Lawyer, to prepare. An example of a possible topic, suggested so far, is whether court proceedings in England should be televised.
The BPP Legal Awareness Society is a very active society, complementary to the BPP Legal Awareness Society. It is driven by a need to discuss corporate strategy as relevant to lawyers, and you can join us here only if you’re a current student at BPP, or accepted a place to study at BPP:

Many thanks.

About the BPP Legal Awareness Society
I am still one of the most active current full-time students of BPP enrolled on a postgraduate course, but I just wanted to clear the air over this issue. To prove it, I am expecting my MBA summative results in organisations and leadership and strategy, systems and operations, on Monday, so wish me luck!
‘Legal Recruit’ is an initiative resulting after discussions of students of the Legal Awareness Society. The Legal Awareness Society is a registered popular Society of BPP. The Twitter thread to be the official mouthpiece of this BPP Society. Its aim always has been through the social media to explain the links between business and law, and we indeed have a popular website which transcends any usual boundaries.
The Society has regular meetings in the City, at the BPP Business School, although any BPP student may attend. Bear in mind that we have students in accountancy, finance, business, law, tax and marketing – so it’s a fertile area for interdisciplinary analysis.
This Society has never received any funding from BPP. Carl Lygo, CEO of BPP, and Clare Tunstall, Student Support Officer, have between them offered funding at various stages; I feel the money would be better spent in other parts of BPP. We like our independence as students in the Society rather, in that all our views are independent of BPP. Save for being a Student Society entity within BPP, we are nothing to do with BPP or its part.
I am meticulous about not using any branding of BPP. I have no BPP branding on any of my videos, books or posts. It is at this point I would like to acknowledge that I have attempted to liaise with the social media unit at BPP who were very helpful in arriving at this draft of the terms and conditions of my LegalAware website albeit it is a student one only, please press here. I signpost these T+Cs in the huge box on my homepage, and indeed anybody who becomes a ‘member’ of my LegalAware website is deeemed to have read them.
Back to ‘Legal Recruit’. It became apparent to me, and Careers staff at BPP Business School, that it’s an enormous pity if law students, despite a II.1 and relevant work experience, perform suboptimally in the psychometric tests. There is in fact a disclaimer on the Legal Recruit website, which reads as follows. This has been the exact wording of the disclaimer since the website went live.
Commercial awareness is a hugely important competence for a trainee in any corporate law firm. You may like to follow legal news on the blog of the BPP Legal Awareness Society, and its Twitter thread. With over 2000 followers including barristers, solicitors, technology and business professionals, journalists and students, it’s a great way to meet legal #tweeps. Please note that LegalRecruit is not endorsed by BPP, and is entirely unaffiliated with any BPP learning.
I am passionate about disability rights and inclusivity. I want disabled law students to be at the heart of the system, which is why I have tried very hard to ensure that individuals with dyslexia or visual impairments are able to benefit from practice on these tests.
