Labour is once again a credible opposition.
The odds were very much against Labour on this in the sense that one-term oppositions are unheard of. However, it is well known that governments lose power, and oppositions rarely win them. On the other hand, the disasters produced by Cameron, Hunt and Osborne are monumental, and the alternatives pitched by Ed have enormous public goodwill.
There is no end to Cameron’s failures, whether that would be being an insignificance in Europe, touting an unsellable Big Society, or being so chummy with the discredited News International. Jeremy Hunt is hanging on by a thread, only because of putting Adam Smith in the firing line. Lansley has virtually a clean slate of opposition from the medical professions for his Health and Social Act. Osborne has plunged the UK into an entirely self-generated recession in Downing Street, through running down the UK through lack of investment in schools, libraries and anything you can think of.
This is a Government which is beyond pathetic. It is not totally incompetent, but internationally a laughing stock. On the other hand, Ed and Labour have explained that they would have cut back but not as fast, thus not causing a larger number to be unemployed and claiming benefit, reducing the tax income. Andy Burnham MP has the support of the majority of the medical professionals, and Ed Balls, along with Professors Blanchflower, Krugman, and Stiglitz, were able to articulate a more credible and less destructive alternative.
This is now a very impressive opposition, and I wish them well. They are the choice of people who are intelligent, and don’t desire Britain to be run down operating at rock-bottom capacity.
