An innovative programme to encourage extensive knowledge sharing: the HE KSS/BSMS Primary Care Dementia Fellowship Programme



The HE KSS/BSMS (Health Education Kent Surrey and Sussex / Brighton and Sussex Medical School) have launched the “Primary Care Dementia Fellowship Programme”.

This is a programme for GPs, practice nurses and staff, and community nurses in Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

(Health Education Kent Surrey and Sussex will provide the funding to release Fellows to attend a regional skills development programme that will run from March to September 2014.

The Fellows will join with doctors and nurses from Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) to build the knowledge and skills needed for them to create better dementia services in KSS.

Prof Sube Banerjee and Breda Flaherty of Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) are leading this initiative based on their successful experience in the NHS London Deanery.

It appears that the main aim is to build a network of Fellows who can act as ‘change catalysts’ (my words not theirs), to spread best contemporaneous practice in dementia care.

It’s important as dementia is one of the top five strategic priorities in the KSS Skills Development Strategy.

Modules will be led by Banerjee and Flaherty, with contributions from clinical experts in dementia; colleagues in social care; people in the care home sector; NGOs; persons living with dementia and carers; specialists in service development; commissioners and researchers.

I believe that such a course will have considerable competitive advantage in being totally disruptive in how traditional training for juniors in dementia is conducted.

The value is clearly in the collaborative ties between members of the network. By lowering the cultural barriers in this way, the team at Sussex have something very special here.

The set-up is perfect for boundary-less knowledge sharing, and this is enormously value as we all get to grips with what the priorities in local and national policy in dementia might be.

There are three modules running from March to June: good practice in dementia assessment and care, good practice in dementia, and changing practice.

These are followed by a ‘Next Steps’ conference and a period of evaluation and research.

Such an approach might become paradigmatic for future learning in the NHS in dementia.

 

Reflecting learning on my MBA



 

In case you’ve stumbled on this blogpost in case you googled “reflective learning” and “MBA”, it’s probably worth me saying what ‘reflective learning’ is. I don’t have a precise definition, but it’s something like assessing what you’ve learnt from a learning experience. This just doesn’t mean the new facts or information that you’ve ‘learnt’, but thinking about your personal reactions to what you’ve done; whether it has changed your attitudes to the subject, indeed changed your behaviour and skills.

I started my MBA in January 2011, and last Friday I discovered that the Examinations Board at BPP had recommended me for the award of MBA in the graduation ceremony in May 2012. I attended seminars and lectures at the BPP Business School, St Mary Axe, right in the heart of the City. I have passed all my exams, and I feel it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience. I enjoyed the seminars we had weekly in each subject, and certainly the quality of your experience is dependent on other people in your class having done the reading! The required reading is indeed voluminous, but I understand there are national requirements about the rough quantity of it. In my case, the online library at BPP became my best friend, and I used to enjoy skim-reading elegant papers on my #ipad2.

The MBA is a superb vehicle for anyone wishing to be at the cutting edge of management. The range of subjects is diverse. Some of what I studied in detail includes change management, types of leadership, costing, budgeting, organisational culture, strategy models, competition, pricing, international marketing, performance-related pay, and value creation in innovation. You realise early-on that there are no precise answers, although in industry you are somewhat obliged to present an air of certainty. The highlight for me was the economics course, where I studied in detail information asymmetry and price differentiation, for example relevant to insurance markets. I also greatly enjoyed learning about and discussing ‘notions of value’, which makes you understand the precise relationship between price, cost and value.

A Professsor of Law at the University of London once told me that nothing I learnt ever would go to waste. I am currently loving the Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School, but I believe my MBA was a worthwhile experience in isolation, as well as being potentially relevant to understanding clients at a senior level in corporate law. Many lawyers like to think that they understand business and finance, but I feel some lawyers should be sufficiently humbled as to appreciate that business, finance, accounting, marketing and innovation, for instance, constitute demanding specialties in themselves. I don’t regret doing my MBA for a second, and it has certainly given me a thirst for learning and continuous professional development, whatever I ultimately decide to do. I have a similar attitude towards my Master of Law in International Professional Legal Practice from the College of Law.

Student protests are doomed (guest article by @fatcouncillor)

The recent student protests, have been a case study, in how not to win an argument.

At first glance, the students had a strong case. Certainly, trebling student fees would appear to be, grossly unfair. However, the contra-argument, goes that, as everyone else’s suffering cuts, it’s only right that the students themselves shoulder some of the burden. There are certainly valid arguments on both sides of the student fees debate.

For students, this was always going to be a difficult argument to win. The UK is now governed by a majority Conservative coalition whose mentality certainly appears to be one of ‘you pay for what you use’. So in order to win the argument, students needed to have a clear, focused campaign strategy in place, whereby they both garnered public support, and maintain pressure on the government.

Sadly or happily, depending on the side of the argument is that you are on, the wheels came off the student bandwagon, during the very first protest in London, when viewers of the BBC News Channel and Sky News were treated to the sight of students throwing missiles at the police, lighting fires, and breaking into buildings causing tens of thousands of pounds of damage. Those scenes were replayed time and again over the following 24 hours.

The students, through their leader, Aaron Porter, and other NUS representatives, then further undermined their argument, by claiming that the rioting and violence were carried out by a handful of anarchists, and that students were not involved. This argument was proven to be untrue by, amongst others, the Daily Mail, and the blogger, Guido Fawkes, who published photographs of NUS representatives and students clearly taking part in the riots.

Additionally, the assertions made by Aaron Porter, were contradicted by the rolling news video, which showed a significant number of placard carrying students directly involved in violence, fighting the police and property destruction.

It seems to me, the students were particularly badly let down by the NUS. When it became clear that it was indeed students who had rioted, Aaron Porter lost credibility, and I for one believe that Mr Porter was more concerned about his future political career than representing students.

After the first protest, the NUS should have taken time to develop a new strategy whereby the argument could be made without the protests disintegrating into violence and destruction. Instead the NUS stepped back from the protests and were replaced by a myriad of local committees and activists. While this clearly removed the focus from the NUS nationally, it also caused the fragmentation of the protests and a loss of focus.

There was no clear leadership, no strategic aims were being articulated, and the message was lost as student protesters began to conflate the tuition fees process with the general UK uncut anti-cuts protest. There are those on the left, such as Laurie Penny, writing in the “New Statesman”, who argue that this is a movement without leadership, and the old structure is no longer apply, and that in effect the world is a different place, and we had all better get used
to it.

However, it should be as plain as the nose on your face, that a group of people with a shared goal, need to have a leader and a strategy, in order to achieve that goal.

To fail to understand this causes two problems. Firstly, the people involved in the movement need leadership, so in that face of a vacuum, they create their own leadership structures. But, people being people, some of these leadership structures will be more about the leadership than the goal. The stated aims and goals of the movement will become difficult to recognise as each leadership group develops a subtly different set of goals.

Secondly, as the aims and goals of the movements are no longer clear, and in some cases contradictory, both the public, and politicians, will be confused as to what students are demanding. In these circumstances, all the government has to do, is to put forward a reasoned argument as to why the changes are necessary. The student argument is then lost, and the media focus moves away onto the next set of government cuts.

Quite how the student protest this is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure. The argument is lost, and the focus has shifted to books and laptops for children, how dreadful BBC’s Christmas programmes are been, and the weather.

There are those within the student leadership (the leadership of the group which has no leadership, remember?) Who are arguing that this is a repeat of the poll tax riots. In short, they are deluded. The poll tax riots united the electorate, with hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life protesting and fighting the government. This has not happened in the students fees protests.

There is no broad support for protests. We did not seem masses of people taking days off to go to London to protest. It did not happen, and it will not happen. This argument is lost. The people on the streets required to get this government to revisit legislation which has already passed through both houses of parliament, will not materialise.

At best, we will see a ragtag of unions, the Socialist Workers Party, and students. And any future protest will be set in the context of violence and property destruction. It will achieve nothing.

Students have been betrayed because the people who they saw as their leaders are looking after themselves. And the people who are sprung up in place of the leaders are simply trying to make a name for themselves, and are using students and the protests to that end.

At some point, students will recognise this. But by then no one will care. This is not, and never has been 1968 all over again. Neither is it the poll tax riots. this is a group of students who have been badly let down by the leadership. At a time when they needed that leadership, what they got was self-interest and the usual suspects looking to make a name for themselves.

Are A level students fundamentally stupid?



Despite rising A level grades, it’s a genuine question: are A level students fundamentally stupid? When lots of young students who’d just reached 18 saw the leadership debates, I wonder how many of them were realistically thinking of the near future. OK, they would argue that they took Nick Clegg and Vince Cable at face value in promising no cuts, but you don’t expect me to be that stupid, do you? Here is a typical view of students in the election campaign, here with Julian Huppert MP, winning Liberal Democrat candidate in Cambridge.

These students voted for Nick Clegg like turkeys voting for christmas. I have absolutely no sympathy for them now. A good argument is that Labour commissioned the Lord Browne report, and therefore the conclusion would have been the same had Labour still been in power. The outcome seems to be not in favour of a graduate tax but to be in favour on no upper cap for how much Universities can charge for their tuition fees.

So why did you vote for Nick Clegg then?

You’ve only got yourselves to blame.
